30. The Accuser | Beyond The Firmament: Tales From The Cosmos

Beyond The Firmament

Tales From The Cosmos

30. The Accuser

- Written by Gift C Enyadike Jr

The advent of Jarwa worlds meant that Emotar had to travel greater distances to ferry the souls of the dead. He did so diligently, without tire or complaint.

Much of the conflict between the forces of Udamu and the forces of Sevaasi took place on or around Teyra. The Paadlan would seek out the other worlds sometimes, only to be driven off by the Jarwa and their own hosts. In a way, the souls from these worlds might have been considered safer. So even if he had to travel farther, Emotar's job was easier...

It was between these trips, the mere seconds between death, that he was approached by Diohlatas.

"Have you a moment?"

"I do not."

"You do. Come from the Father, I have."

"What needs he of me?"

"A question answered."

"A question? What does he not know?"

"I will ask."

"Then ask."

"What have you done?"

"What have I done?"

"I will ask."

"I do as I do. I bring the souls to the Father for him to judge."

"Yet there are those who do not arrive. Sinners who are not judged."

"That is not my charge."

"Yes, it is."

"I do not count. I carry."

"What have you done?"

"I have told you."

"One from each world. Missing."

"I do not count."

"Why not?"

"That is not-"

"It is, and find them, you will."

"Where would I find sinners, but where they are? Where the Father is not. Or perhaps in the mouth of the beast, where we are forbidden."

"You will find them."

"That is not my charge."

"I have given it to you."

"Are YOU the Father?"

"Sent by him, I was"

"To ask a question. I have answered. Now leave me... to my charge."

Diohlatas left, and Emotar returned... to his charge.
